No Timothy. No Future…

With the new year approaching I encourage you, if you have not already, to Identify Leadership within your group.  The Apostle Paul, like Jesus, practiced entrusting others with the responsibility of sharing in the ministry.

If for whatever reason you could no longer lead your group is there someone who could step up to replace you? Continue reading

City Group Leader: Are You Responsible For The Spiritual Growth Of Others?

Spiritual Growth is a dynamic process that is highly personal yet involves others at the same time.  As a group leader what do you do and how should you feel when those in your group do not seem to be advancing or changing?  What role do you play in others growing spiritually and to what extent are you responsible? City Group Leaders Night 2014 Review

1.  Thank You!

Thank you for leading a City Group.  We all know it is more than opening your home once a week for an hour.  There is cleaning, rescheduling, preparation, and connecting throughout the week.  Thank you for your time and commitment to help our church experience community and grow spiritually.

2.  We celebrated some of the wins that are taking place in City Groups.

Ted Baer and Bruce Downard, along with their group host paintball nights

for outside groups and then end the night with food and sharing the Word of God.

3.  We discussed struggles that seem to be consistent when it comes to leading a City Group.

4.  We examined the importance of Reliability over Qualifications.

2 Timothy 2:1-7  You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. 3Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. 5Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. 6The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.

Notice that the Apostle Paul instructs to empower people who are first reliable and ALSO qualified to teach.  It’s one thing to be able to teach, it’s another to be reliable.

Are you reliable?  Can you be reliable?

Faithfulness is the qualifier in the Kingdom of God.  God uses those who are/will be faithful.

In the above scripture, the soldier, the athlete, & the farmer only reap the rewards after the work has been put in.

Think about this, Jesus chose twelve disciples in a day and then spent the next three years with them.

Evangelism comes quick.  Discipleship can be a slow process.

1 Corinthians 3:5-9  5What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.

Be encouraged and know that God will not ask anything of you that He is not willing to empower you to accomplish.

God bless,

Pastor Evan

What Exercise Reminded Me About Spiritual Growth

“No matter how slow you go, you’re still beating the guy sitting on the couch.”

I recently noticed this phrase posted on the bulletin board at the gym. There is so much encouragement and truth wrapped up in that little sentence. As I thought about the meaning it hit me how comparable physical fitness and spiritual growth are.

Providing Care Through Follow Up

PROVIDING CARE -City Groups

Providing Care is one of the KEYS TO SUCCESS FOR YOUR CITY GROUP. This key focuses on how to provide care in small groups in big ways.

One of the ways to provide care as a City Group leader is by following up with those who attend your group. Doing so creates opportunity for deeper ministry and communicates that you care about those who attend your group.

Below are a few questions to ask yourself that may indicate the need to follow up with your group members: Continue reading

Understanding Spiritual Growth

Spiritual Growth is one of the main goals that we seek to accomplish through City Groups at Church on Fire.  Below is the audio from a teaching Bill Willits shared at the re:group conference hosted by North Point Church in Atlanta, GA.  I have also attached the outline to follow along with.   Spiritual Growth is something that we all want to experience and see in others.

Serving Is Leading

“Some leaders may serve the Word, and leaders may serve tables, but all leaders serve (Acts6).”[1]

Below are three quick points concerning serving and Christian leadership, I hope they encourage you as you use your talents and inspire you to maintain a good attitude as you serve the Lord.

SERVING IS LEADING

Serving, by its very nature, is doing something that someone else is not doing.  Any time you do something that no one else is doing you are providing a path to follow.  Serving, by default, makes you an example.  As you serve you provide a model of leadership for others to follow.

Priority and Practice of Bible Study

In light of Pastor Doug’s sermon series ABC Building Blocks, especially the last two messages concerning salvation and discipleship, I want us to look at a few of his key points by breaking this post into two main categories:  PRIORITY and PRACTICE of the Bible.

Anyone who is sincere about growing spiritually must be willing to consistently spend time in God’s Word by reading it and hearing teachings from it.

The discipline of reading the Bible can be difficult to initiate if we do not understand why the book was given to us, however its purpose is discovered within its own text:

“Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

John 20:29-31, NIV Bible

Belief in Jesus is vital to life, here on earth and eternally. The Bible teaches that Jesus is/gives life.  A person can determine if they are experiencing “life” as the Bible promises by considering what their life resembles.

Scripture

When examining areas of your life and even your small group ask yourself if those areas relate more closely to life or death?  Are there areas that need to be nurtured and revitalized by the Word of God? Continue reading

Making Disciples

Over the past couple of weeks the topic of multiplication has been the focus.  This post is about discipleship.  Discipleship is where the rubber meets the road when it comes to multiplication.  It is one thing to identify leaders and have a heart to multiply but discipleship is the process that allows both of these goals to be reached.

city group leaders - discipleship

The reason for City Groups is to help facilitate the process of Discipling Believers, which is a part of our mission at CFM.  We want to see people experience community and grow spiritually as a result of participating in a City Group.  We believe City Groups is a great model to use to accomplish this but this work can only be accomplished by people who engage in the mission.  Concerning discipleship Leroy Eims wrote:

“The ministry is to be carried on by people, not programs.  It is to be carried out by someone and not by some thing”.[1]

City Group is the “thing” that we are using at CFM but the desired results can only be accomplished through people who are committed to the goal.

The following are a  few principles taken from the book, The Lost Art of Disciple Making by Leroy Eims. Continue reading
